Erase Me Cover Me Forget Me | 2024

an identity concealed

This painting emerged on top of another piece which was covered with new layers of white paint. This process reflects the fear of being incapable of achieving perfection.

This piece is about the dread of being exposed as an imposter, of being discovered to be defective and imperfect. It’s about the fear of failure and the judgement that comes with it. It’s about believing that worth comes from doing rather than being.

It represents the battle with the belief that only by producing exceptional, flawless work will I be appreciated and worthy, not only as an artist but also as a human being.

The colour palette oscillates between whites and greys, creating a false sense of calm. A semi-transparent line runs across the centre, covering the largest bright lines underneath. It’s a metaphorical way of showing a panicked attempt at covering up what has already been revealed, which may be too exposing or vulnerable. The only aspects that can be revealed are almost unnoticeable. This is about the price we have to pay for erasing who we are in our totality.
