He understood that the only way up was down, deeper underground, into the unknown. During the descent, he recalled the bone-chilling stories about the kind of darkness he would find in his mine. To his surprise, the deeper he went, the brighter it got. So he stopped, confused. About halfway between curiosity and safety.
